Halter: essential equipment for handling and groundwork

Why are there different types of halters?

• training and groundwork,
• in-hand presentation at a show,
• horse transport.

Classic halter

The classic halter is intended for daily horse handling. It is used for:
• leading the horse by hand,

Ethological halter

The ethological halter is designed for groundwork, training, and precise communication with the horse. Its structure allows for more targeted action, based on defined pressure points. It is primarily used for:

• teaching responses to pressure,
• developing the horse-human relationship.

More technical than a classic halter, it requires a good understanding of its function to be used correctly. It should never be used to tie a horse. 

Side-pull halter

The side-pull halter is a halter equipped with side rings, allowing for lateral guiding action without a bit. This is indeed a halter with rings, not to be confused with a side-pull bridle. It allows for:
• more precise steering,
• better control on the ground,
• clearer action than a standard halter.

The side-pull halter is an intermediate solution between the ethological halter and the side-pull bridle for riding a horse bitless.

Different halter materials

The material of the halter directly influences the comfort, durability, and use of the equipment. Each material meets specific needs.

Rope halters

Often used for groundwork and ethology, rope halters offer a more precise action and great lightness. However, they require skilled use because the contact surface is reduced.

Leather halters

Leather halters are valued for their strength, elegance, and comfort once softened. They are often chosen for presentation, transport, or careful daily use.

Nylon halters

Nylon halters are among the most common. Durable, easy to maintain, and available in many colors, they are perfect for everyday use.

Halters with sheepskin or faux sheepskin lining

Some halters feature a sheepskin or faux sheepskin lining on sensitive areas (noseband, poll strap, cheek pieces). This finish helps to reduce rubbing and improve comfort, especially for sensitive or clipped horses. Sheepskin halters are highly appreciated for horse transport, to provide maximum comfort during the journey. 

Bi-material halters

Bi-material halters combine the advantages of several materials, for example, leather and rope or nylon and sheepskin. They offer a good balance between precision, comfort, durability, and aesthetics.

• the horse's sensitivity,
