• The cheekpieces must be adjusted long enough so that, with loose reins, there is no upward pull on the bit.
- Too short: constant pressure on the poll, horse stiff or defensive.
- Too long: imprecise and delayed action.

• The correct adjustment is one where the action on the poll is progressive and measured.

• Once mounted:
- the cheekpieces should not be constantly taut,
- the horse should be able to stretch, chew, and remain mobile in its neck.

• If the cheekpieces are constantly engaged, the adjustment or usage should be reviewed.

Draw rein extensions allow for combined action on the mouth and neck, accompanying the work, especially over jumps or for horses that tend to lean.

• Assembly and direction

The extensions are attached from the bit to the headpiece, without crossing.
The rings or snap hooks should be placed outwards to avoid pressure points or pinching.

• Adjustment

The extensions should be adjusted long enough to remain neutral when the horse is in a correct posture.
They should only intervene occasionally, when the horse loses balance or opens up excessively.

Constant tension indicates an adjustment that is too short or inappropriate use.
